Decorating your Kitchen at Christmas

With many homes now being festooned with all those wonderful Christmas sparkles, now is the time to make sure you are including your kitchen in your decoration planning.

So much time is spent in the kitchen, especially over Christmas. So it is only right and fair that the heart of the home has some special Christmas touches as well!

With open planned living being a massive part of many households now, decorations will shine through from the dining areas, as well as your hallway and perhaps living room. So let’s see what we can suggest that will bring your kitchen into the Christmas spirit as well.

Lights

Lights are the quickest and most effective way of bringing a bit of sparkle to your kitchen. Whatever your choice, coloured or white lights, we all love fairy lights and they instantly make you feel that buzz of Christmas. Keep electrical components away from any water, but attach lighting under under or over your cupboards to create something magical. There are also many battery operated copper wired lighting options that are very economical and the batteries for these will last for ages. They can be twisted onto your window sill perhaps, and mixed with candles, Christmas Cacti or perhaps a stunning Poinsettia – just glorious! *

Ribbons & Wreaths

These aren’t just for the front door! They can be hung on your kitchen cupboards, with over door hooks; especially if you have a large corner unit or perhaps pantry. Somewhere with a large space looks great. Along with ribbons, pine cones or even some holly, draped decoratively will look amazing. *

Wooden Accessories

There are many classic wooden accessories that are perfect for the kitchen. Christmas trees, pine cones, reindeer, gingerbread men… the list is endless and if you want that classic farmhouse feel, then wooden accessories are a great way to go.

Candles

Most of us love candles all year round, but they are especially lovely at Christmas time. White, red, gold, silver or green all create a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere within your kitchen. Many are also scented which is also a plus. Just don’t pick some that smell like pine loo cleaner – not such a nice choice of smell! *

Plants

As we just mentioned, Poinsettia are the classic Christmas plant and now is the time to buy one, large or small! The small ones look fabulous in a silver or gold pot on your kitchen window sill and instantly give that Christmas feel. There are also different colours available if you don’t want the traditional red – see how long after Christmas you can keep it alive!!

Go for a wonderful walk with the kids or family and collect pine cones and other seasonal branches including holly.

Any other green plants are great and it is easy to accessorise with lighting, and dare we say it, tinsel!! Tinsel is a bit like marmite – many love this 70’s iconic Christmas decoration, but a lot will have absolutely no tinsel whatsoever! Your choice totally. *

Christmas Tree

The biggest one of them all – do you have room for a Christmas tree in your kitchen? Many don’t, so will perhaps opt for a small table top version, but if you have kitchen/dining living, then perhaps include your tree between the two areas so you can really benefit from the beautifully decorated and well lit tree whilst cooking. *

Decorate your kitchen island

If you are lucky enough have a kitchen island or kitchen table, then this is a very easy platform to decorate. Lighting, a large bowl of sparkly baubles, some freestanding decorations, even some holly would be lovely, intertwined with some lights. There are so many choices here. And perhaps you can hang something decorative from the ceiling here – make a real Christmas statement! *

Back door mat

This is an easy one and means that muddy footprints as well as animals can be incorporated within your Christmas decorations – an easy win!

Accessories

Now is the time to get out all of those Christmas mugs, plates and anything green or red! If you have a dresser, swap over what you normally display to create something really effective. Don’t forget those battery operated lights on your dresser as well!

Whilst decorating your beautiful kitchen, make sure you buy suitable hanging accessories. You don’t want to end up damaging your cupboards or walls in the process of making your room look festive. You also don’t want to be rubbing out sticky marks for months afterwards!

Basically, over Christmas, everything in your kitchen should be a part of your Christmas colour scheme, whether it is red, gold, gold, white, green or sky blue pink! Just please make sure the heart of your home is included in your Christmas planning!

Safety Note *

Please ensure candles are kept away from children or anything combustible. Always ensure you have no decorations hanging near any naked flames. With there being water, gas and electricity in the kitchen, take all necessary safety precautions.
