With the many benefits of natural light, it’s a wonder people don’t prioritise its importance in their kitchens. Natural light not only enhances the look and feel of your home but also contributes to a healthier and more enjoyable space. So, let’s take a moment to talk about the importance of natural light in your kitchen and how you can maximise the positive effects for you and your family.
In today’s modern age, many of us spend hours a day sitting under artificial lights in front of a digital screen. Whether that be a lamp on your desk, your mobile phone or your TV, our exposure to blue light is as high as it’s ever been. Natural light can transform a space. By increasing the amount of natural light in your kitchen, you can create an open and inviting space that looks and feels fantastic!
The Benefits of Natural Light
Greater exposure to natural light has been linked to an improvement in mood and overall well-being. Studies have shown a reduction in stress levels and increased productivity when more natural light is present. This can transform the way you interact with your kitchen if the atmosphere is positive and full of light!
When utilised correctly, natural light can act as a spot light that showcases the unique design elements of your kitchen. It highlights the texture of materials, can bring a new hue out of some existing colours and can add an additional layer of depth to your space. Whether you have a minimalist modern kitchen space or a more traditional style, your space will greatly benefit from additional natural light.

From Your Windows…
Obviously natural light comes through your windows and you can’t always do much about that side of things. If your kitchen faces north and your window or windows are small, these will go against you somewhat. For getting sunlight and the best hours of the day for light, within your kitchen. But there are other ways to enhance natural light, even when your windows aren’t huge and the dull light of winter months are dragging on. Here are a few options for you to try:
Don’t Clutter Your Windowsill!
It is obviously lovely to make your home your own and have lots of plants and ornaments. But if your windows are small and don’t get full sunlight, then try and keep the window sills clutter free to make the most of what space you do have – the more light in the better!
Reflective surfaces
One technique that we see implemented is utilising reflective surfaces. For example, glossy tiles or stainless steel appliances bounce light around the room. Alternatively, a well-positioned mirror can enhance the natural light and give the illusion of spaciousness.
Another option here would be to look at polished flooring. A dark or matte finish will absorb light. However, shiny floorings like ceramic, light-coloured wood or high-gloss vinyl will emphasise the existing light in the space.
Colour of Surfaces
Using bright or light colours on your surfaces or cabinets is one of the best and easiest ways to help reflect light around your kitchen. Dark colours absorb light better than bright colours. This means that lighter shades of colour will often cause sunlight to bounce off and make the room appear more spacious.

Additional Lighting
Granted, this isn’t natural light, however, that doesn’t mean that it won’t have a positive impact on the look of your kitchen. Think about overhead cabinets or any odd spaces where you could add some extra light. You can then couple them up with a tasteful lamp or LEDs.
Windows or Skylights
This is more of a large-scale project and won’t be a viable option for everyone. However, one trick you can utilise when it comes to increasing natural light is taking note of the placement of your windows to ensure you make the most of the sun throughout the day. If you’re in a position where you can do so, strategically placing windows to make the most of the sun’s cycle is by far the most effective way to maximise natural light.
Another option would be incorporating a skylight or roof windows into your kitchen design. These bring in an abundance of natural light from above, illuminating the whole space collectively. Skylights are particularly effective in areas where wall space is limited or obstructed.
