Cleaning Methods For Karndean Flooring
One of the key benefits of Karndean flooring is that is very easy to look after and keep looking like new! Its top-of-the-line, hardwearing protective surface treatment can shrug off dirt and spills with ease.
Daily Clean
To remove loose debris you should sweep the floor with a soft bristle brush and then use a damp mop. If you wish to use a vacuum cleaner we recommend checking with the manufacturer to make sure it’s suitable for use on a Karndean floor.
Follow this with regular cleaning with a pH-neutral cleaner will help keep your floors looking their best. Karndean recommends adding 50ml of Karndean Clean (1 notch represents 50ml) to approximately 8-10 litres of water. Mop this solution onto the entire floor surface, remove any excess liquid and wait for the floor to completely dry before walking onto it.
We would recommend you avoid the use of cleaning products that contain bleach or other household chemicals since they could damage your floor. Additionally, you should avoid the use of regular household cleaners and bleach-based detergents. These could make the floor slippery or cause discolouration. Always opt for Karndean Clean or other products designed for use on vinyl floors.
Stain removal from Karndean Flooring
Stains can completely ruin the look and feel of any floor. As soon as you notice a spill, mop up and use Karndean Clean to reduce the risk of slipping or potential staining. Many liquids will be easily removed. That said, solvent-based liquids, wine and some spices can leave a mark.
Stubborn stains can be removed by spot cleaning with undiluted Karndean Clean or Karndean Remove using a non-abrasive scouring pad.
There are many alternative methods on how to clean Karndean flooring that you can find online. If you have an extremely stubborn stain then you could try these, but remember, always test any non-recommended cleaning solution on an inconspicuous area of your floor before using it on a larger stain.
Can I Steam-clean Karndean Flooring?
We do not recommend you steam clean Karndean Flooring. Yes, it can handle water to some level but not steam. The heat and moisture loosen the glue and cause the top layer of the flooring to lose its shape. Vinyl is plastic and not as resistant as the natural materials that Karndean replicate the appearance of.
Time For A Refresh?
Karndean recommend that every six to twelve months, depending on wear, you strip and refresh your floor, to further enhance its look and durability. This can be done by first applying Karndean Remove to prepare the floor for Karndean Refresh.
When applying Karndean Refresh to your floor, be careful not to apply it too thickly. Two thin coats will be sufficient and is what’s recommended by the manufacturer.
Prevention Methods
While Karndean floors are extremely hardwearing, it’s in your best interest to protect your floors from scratching. In high-traffic areas, like entrances or walkways, you can put down door mats or rugs to protect from the grit and moisture from coming inside. Please note that rubber-backed mats can cause discolouration to the floor over time.
