Both Dekton and Quartz are popular engineered materials used for countertops and other surfaces in kitchens and bathrooms. These two standout options come with their own advantages and drawbacks. So is Dekton better than quartz? It really depends on how you define “better” and what your specific needs are.
What is Dekton?
Dekton is an ultra-compact surface made from a mixture of more than 20 raw materials. Using the Dekton exclusive press, you can produce in a few hours what nature has created over thousands of years. It’s manufactured exclusively by the Spanish company Cosentino, which partially accounts for its high price.
It is highly durable and resistant to heat, scratches, and stains. Dekton is also UV-resistant, making it suitable for outdoor use. However, Dekton can be more expensive than quartz and may have limited colour options.

What is Quartz?
Quartz is an engineered stone, made from approximately 90-95% quartz crystals mixed with resins, polymers and pigments. This combination creates a non-porous surface that is resistant to scratches, stains, and bacteria growth. Quartz mimics the appearance of a natural stone without the inherent vulnerabilities of the material.
Stain Resistance
Dekton requires minimal upkeep due to the non-porous surface which prevents the absorption of liquids or stains. A routine clean with mild soap and water is usually sufficient to keep these looking pristine.
Quartz countertops are similarly low maintenance due to the non-porous surface. A mild detergent or specialized quartz cleaner is perfect for cleaning your quartz worktop.
Durability
When it comes to looking at the durability of these materials, both the Dekton and quartz excel in different aspects. Dekton surfaces have exceptional scratch and heat resistance, making them nearly indestructible to damage from knives, hot pots and pans. Home Depot goes a step further, calling it “completely scratch resistant” and claiming it “cannot be scorched or stained.”
On the other hand, quartz is also highly scratch-resistant and will have no problem with the sharpest kitchen knives. However, it may be slightly susceptible to heat damage if exposed to extreme temperatures.
Design and Customisation Options
Dekton and quartz offer various colours, patterns and finishes to suit various design preferences. Dekton’s manufacturing process allows for unique textures and designs that mimic natural stone, concrete and wood.
Quartz comparatively offers consistent patterns and colours, making it easier to match across large surfaces.
Cost Considerations
In terms of cost, Dekton tends to be the more expensive option due to the intricacies of the manufacturing process and superior quality.
Quartz countertops offer a more budget-friendly option that does not compromise durability or aesthetics.
Availability
Dekton has gained popularity in recent years and may be less readily available in certain regions. Whereas quartz has been an incredibly popular option for decades and is offered by most.
Is Dekton Better than Quartz?
If you have a larger budget to invest in Dekton then there are benefits associated with the material. Both Dekton and quartz have exceptional properties that make them great choices for worktops. Dekton’s superior heat and scratch resistance comes with a higher cost that will ultimately impact your decision.
