5 Tips to Avoid the ‘Beige Baby’ Trend

The ‘beige baby’ trend refers to a recent rise in parents avoiding using colour in their children’s bedrooms, clothes and toys. Typically, the aim of this is to ensure their entire home fits under the same aesthetic, often opting for more old-fashioned toys and clothes to keep the colour scheme the same. But, what if we told you it was possible to keep your aesthetic without making everything beige? Here are 5 ways to include more colour in your kid’s lives!

1. Embrace Colour in the Rest of Your Home

No one is expecting parents to redo their whole living area to include colour everywhere. However, making small changes can make the world of difference to how everything flows. Adding small pops of colour throughout your home can make your nursery feel less out of place.

First, think of some nice colours that you want to use. Research has shown that colour is crucial for babies’ development. From there, start adding items to your home collection which fit that colour scheme. You could add some colourful pillows, or a rug, or some kitchenware. If you are on more of a budget, try painting furniture you already have with some colour. It doesn’t have to be bright pink, but just adding a some colour throughout your home to match your nursery will help a little more with the flow.

2. Use Pastels

Pastels are toned down, soft shades of colours. This is a great way to incorporate colour into your child’s room, without it infringing on the look of the rest of the house. You can stick with more ‘gender-neutral’ colours, like pastel yellow or green if that suits you more, and it gives colour, but not to the point where it’s overwhelming.

You may also want to mix point one and two together to avoid the ‘beige baby’ trap, and include soft pastels in the rest of your home too. Even things as small as a colourful blanket in pastels can be good, and it doesn’t take away from the design of the rest of your home.

3. Try a Feature Wall

Not only do feature walls look great, but they can also help you if you’re struggling with a design in your nursery. Try painting just one wall with colour (again, pastels would work great for this), and watch how it brightens the room, without taking away from the flow of the home.

Alternatively, you could opt to paint the ceiling. This also works well with a pattern or small mural rather than a solid colour, such as painting branches with leaves, a sky or perhaps some small mountains. This is a great choice for those wanting to include colour, but so it is not overwhelming. This should give your baby enough stimulation for development if done well!

4. Have a Theme

Using a theme in your nursery means you can add colour and texture, while still being calm and fitting with everything else in the home. Selecting a theme like animals, or patterns, incorporates fun colours and details, perfect for baby’s development.

Some go for much more specific themes, like whales or fish, which means you have more control over the colour scheme than if you were to do a broader category. You can also subtly extend this to the rest of the home in order to help flow. For example, hanging a small painting of said theme or perhaps having coordinating ornaments.

5. Go for Coloured Lights

If you really don’t want to commit to adding colour by more permanent means, such as painting walls, etc, you could pick some coloured lights. Even something as small as a colourful nightlight can help brighten the space and give it some colour. On a broader scale, you could go for a starlight projector which changes colour. This is also helpful for stimulation, the lights and the patterns make a great sensory space!

Doing this means you can also switch between colours easily, and only have it on at certain times of the day. It is not something you have to stick to, and it is also more budget friendly than some of the other options. This is also a great idea as you can use the colours to reflect the baby’s mood, for example, using a blue light is likely to calm them.
